“I was instantly inspired by Mark’s book. When the opportunity arose to install swales in our hay field, I jumped on it. We had always had runoff issues from the field with any significant rainfall. I loved sharing my farm with Mark, whose knowledge is encyclopedic. When he wasn’t siting the swales, we could ask questions. He worked with Johann (with whom we still
coordinate work) and Eric the master bulldozer operator. It was amazing to watch to project take shape. We chose to seed the berms with wildflower seed but did nothing else. What is even more amazing is the proliferation of wildlife: birds, insects, frogs, as well as plants we didn’t expect, like cattails and willows. The field has come alive! We are now moving into a new phase of planting food-producing trees and shrubs. This past spring, we planted hazelnuts. This fall, we are working with Johann on more trees and hazelnuts. It’s a fascinating process.”
